1. In Cold Blood - by Truman Capote (crime/drama) excellent non-fiction book
2. Absolute Power - David Baldacci (crime/thriller) fast read, "pot boiler"
3. Les Miserables - Victor Hugo (plot revolves around French revolution, very good book, my personal favorite)
4. Siddhartha - Herman Hesse (thought provoking, powerful)
5. The Catcher in the Rye - J D Salinger (no one should miss this book)
6. Autobiography of Malcolm X - Alex Hailey with Malcolm X
7. Surely You're joking Mr. Feynman ! - Richard Feynman (surprisingly, its very interesting and funny even for laymen)
8. Animal Farm - George Orwell (simplistic language but brilliant book)
9. Crime & Punishment - Fyodor Dostoyevsky (i personally havent read it entirely, whatever i read was excellent)
10. Sherlock Holmes entire 2 volumes - if not at least Hound of the Baskevilles - Arthur Conan Doyle - fun and addictive.
11. The Moon and the Six Pence - W.S. Maugham .. most people like Of human bondage more though
12. 3 Men in a Boat - Jerome K Jerome - really funny book, a good read
13.Short stories by O.Henry, Saki, Guy de Maupassant
I suppose you might have read of them. You said you're and unsophisticated reader, so i took the liberty of suggesting some common basic books.. I dont want to recommend what i havent read.

OH yes .. after seeing someone mentioned Oscar wilde - how could i forget! - Picture of Dorian Gray.. would put it in my top 3 recommendations .... must read it!!! Have fun!!

i dont know what kind of books your into but i know that when i first started reading i couldnt find anything to keep my interest but when i did find something i was upset that i couldnt KEEP reading about the people in the book! so i would suggest start by reading just the first book of a series and that way if you find one that holds your interest you can keep reading

The southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris:
(its what the TRUE BLOOD series on HBO is based on)
its set around Shreveport,La (where i live) and Dallas,Tx and areas like that. its a funny vampire series with some edge to it and i think you would enjoy it. (it has plenty of fighting and gore if your into that)
The Prey Series by John Sandford
its a series of books about a detective named Lucas Davenport that is always chasing different serial killers and its full of action. hard to put down!
The Dexter Series by Jeff Lindsay
(also a show on HBO called Dexter)
its about a serial killer who only kills other serial killers and he actually becomes a cop. its a VERY good series to get you going.
