A while back, my check engine light came on. Eventually it started blinking and my car would shake really bad (this would come and go) - but eventually it hardly ran, and I barely made it to a place to fix it. The guy at this place said he scraped out a lot of carbon build up, replaced some spark plugs, etc. Said it could be the catalytic converter, but he didn't think so. A few weeks later, the check engine light was on again, emissions time was coming so I got a new catalytic converter (not a Honda one, though - it was cheaper). About a month or two after that, the check engine light is on again and the same thing keeps happening... check engine light is blinking, car is shaking, and to top it off I have a very nice rattling noise that I can't stand.
My boyfriend is into cars, but can't figure my car out. He has a code reader and all the codes that show up say that my cylinders are misfiring (yes, all four). I think he might have gotten both O2 sensor codes too? I have to check. Over the past 2-3 years that my honda has been acting up, various people say it's the O2 sensor(s) or catalytic converter. I got a new (yet cheap) converter about 6 months ago.
What do I do about the misfiring codes? If the O2 sensor code comes up, should I replace the O2 sensor? Should I fix both? What about the rattling noise??
I'm not sure if it's relevant but we cleared the codes with his code reader, and my car is running pretty good. I know it's only a matter of time before the check engine light comes back on, etc. but is it normal that my car is running fine once the codes are cleared? Is there something wrong with my car's computer???
Please help! Oh, and it's a '99 Honda Civic Ex with 150,000 miles on it.
