new to traveling by train- need some information and help?

hi- new to traveling by train. i am trying to hit a destination before i arrive at my final destination- 8 hours away. does anyone use a COMPREHENSIVE website where i can simply see the places it goes? maybe this sounds dumb but i can't find any good websites.
i live in the USA near NY
