Newbie to the red wine world?

I have just recently started enjoying red wines, as I have grown tired of always drinking white wine. What are some great starter reds that aren't too dry to help me on my way. I have tried some merlots and pinot noirs that I have really enjoyed, but would like some specific brands/names that I could find in a local alcohol store. I have also heard good things about red zins, particularly Ravenswood. Cheers!
