No Left Turn? Traffic laws? Please Help!!!!?

So here is the situation, and lets see if I can paint an accurate mental picture. I live in Denver CO and I received a "Failure to yield to traffic control device" ticket. I approached an intersection. This intersection had a lane to the far left with a median to its right with a do not enter sign, a lane in the middle with another median to its right with a "right side of median only" sign, then another lane with a stop sign and a "right lane must turn right" sign. So here if the dashes represent a lane and the "()" represent medians it looked something like this. ____(do not enter)____(right of median)____stop and right lane turn right sign. I approached this intersection at 2AM so it was dark. there are absolutely no lines or symbols on the road itself to divide these lanes. I entered the far right lane, stopped, and I saw the "right lane must turn right" sign, however the lane wasn't marked and was as wide as two car lengths (so who was to know if there weren't two lanes here due to no lines on the road to divide) I looked across the intersection and there was not a "no left turn arrow" sign. I checked that there was no traffic and safely performed a left turn and needless to say got pulled over by a very unfriendly officer. So the focus of my questions are:
1 - Do the lanes have to be marked?
2 - If there is not a "no left turn arrow" sign, is it legal to turn? Is a "no left turn arrow" sign mandatory?
3 - What are the requirements for road markings and traffic signs?
4 - Am I just SOL?

Thank you to anyone who has the knowledge to answer and your help is greatly appreciated.
