Why on earth does the UK still measure athletes stones? I mean the metric system was brought in because it's a rather sane and sensible method of measurement.

Because its the way we all learn to talk about weight, so it's naturally the measure people want weight to be talked about. I can do metric and I can do stones. It's when people talk about xxxlbs I have to boot up my internal calculator

See I understand the US wanting to keep imperial measure for some thing because it's pretty good for estimation... But stones just seems silly.

That's like saying you want to weigh everything in grams, and kilograms is silly. It's just an aggregate measure.

When you measure something it helps if the unit has some sort of correspondence to the thing being measured I think.
For me lbs and kg's are too small to measure people sized things properly.
Stones are just right IMHO.
In the same way feet are about right too.
Metres are too big in the same way.
A unit needs to be easily visualized in relation to the thing being measured.
What's the name for 10 kg's? Is there one? That'd be a useful unit.

No, you're just old and used to thinking of certain measurements for certain things. I have the same problem. Even though I have perfectly calibrated idea of what 1km is. It doesn't translate to geographical navigation. I still think in miles.

Not really. There have been people caught doping from nearly every country, but China has a very extensive, relatively recent record of doping in this particular sport. Suspicion was inevitable.

Yes. There's 10mm to 1cm and 100cm in a meter. There are 2.5cm in a metric inch and 12 metric inches to 1 metric foot.

So even if I say I'm 6' tall it really should mean nothing to anybody not counting in metric because we're using metric feet and inches and not imperial olden days numbers.
