It basically gives you a constant resistance. It is like having one of those stationary bikes with the big metal wheel and then putting brake pads on it to slow you down.
i am just guessing, you know when in spinning classes you turn the knob on the bike to make the resistance more so you sweat more. i think that is what is meant by friction mode. that is your bike experiences friction or resistance in movement.
