Open CD/DVD drive and laptop screen goes all purple or black?

When I click the button to open my CD/DVD drive it , sometimes ( but increasingly ), maks my whole laptop screen turn purple or black - and I cant do anything, not even switch my laptop off. I keep having to take the battery out to restart it which im sure isnt a good thing to be doing. Whats could cause it?
