Opinion-Blue Ray Disc player. Soon to be obsolete technology? Or worth the price?

We rent movies from Redbox for a $1 which is less than a mile from my house. I have no intention of downloading movies online or through the cable box. Sometimes my movies aren't in but the Blu rays are. They cost the same through Redbox. Is it worth buying a Blue Disc player? Blockbuster seems to have more and more shelves of Blu Ray. I remember when they started taking out the VHS tapes. Is this the future of entertainment or soon to be obsolete?
