Phillips tv LCD 22". DVD player will not hookup?

new dvd player with HD and standard cords. Have attempted to try it on every channel, attempted to hook it up to the VCR which works only if being used. N64 works by connecting it to video connection on the side of the tv. Need to get DVD player to work. Tried many combinations with the wires going directly to the tv, no response in visual or audio (had dvd playing to check). Tried it where we put the N64 in, it makes a sound and shows up in black and white. Not a good sound, the sound when you put the wire in the wrong spot. Anyone know how to get this all to work?
ITS A TV, DO NOT NEED SOFTWARE
