"8 CPU cores at 1.6GHz, with a custom 800MHz graphics processor in the GPU. There are 8GB of RAM on board, with 32MB of fast embedded SRAM at double the throughput speed, and a 50GB-capable 6x Blu-ray drive. Wireless connectivity protocols include both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct, and there’s still a Gigabit Ethernet port for gamers with low latency multiplayer demands. It’ll also come with USB 3.0 and HDMI 1.4a, which supports 3D over HDMI, Ethernet, audio return channels and 4K resolution."
sony does seem to be pointing to a new console at least, it could be either an update to the poor selling vita(but they said that the vita would have 10 years) or more likely the ps4. as they recently did a history of the playstation and their initial trailer was the 4 button thing, something they sometimes do before a major console release. sony is also leaking money due to the poor sales of the vita and the ps3 not being up to par, and the sony company itself is not doing very well at the moment either(customers are pointing to lack of origionality). a new console release may give the company the boost it needs. or it could be a tablet, those seem to be coming in.
as for microsofts xbox the answer is pointing to no. one of the origional designers now hates microsoft for bast ardising his console with adverts and making into an entertainment centre, and microsoft themselves have not said anything, nor is it on their announcment line up for this year. they have alsos said that the only update they could think of would be some slight graphical update and 3d, but that they would only release if most people had a 3d television. given that they are selling the most consoles still i think they don't even need to update the 360 right now.
The biggest disappointment is the rumour that there will be an encryption mechanism that locks every game to the physical console the first time you play it - meaning it has no trade-in value, you can't swap with your friends... you can't even take a game round to a friends for some offline coop. The target demographic is also going to be those gaming veterans who have now grown up and have jobs etc. - so the price points will reflect this.
If these rumours are true then it marks the death of gaming. Publishers have pushed too far and I for one will throw in my controller.
