The chains derailed while I was practicing shifting the gears. I have the SRM MRX Twist shifter, 24 speed.

I was really careful to shift while I was pedaling slowly and not to over stretch the chains. Any ideas as to what I could have done wrong?

Is there a way I can fix it myself? I can't wait until the shop opens up tomorrow.

Thank you.
Hi edward, wow I'm really bummed. I bought the fuji absolute 3.0.
Nah, I bought it at a real bike shop.
I was hoping you were online, thanks for answering my questions.
Can I shift the right one all the way up to 8 when the left side is on two? That's when I it happened.
Thanks again Edward!

if you have to ask how to fix it then I recommend you wait until tomorrow morning and let your Brick and Mortar shop do it for you. This should not be an 8 speed shifter it should be a 7 speed shifter! Low end for Sram and usually found on the "higher end" dept store bikes....if this is what you have then do not mess with it yourself as it is more than just the chain and the rear derailleur is out of alignment and who knows what else....just wait! and one more thing, you did not over stretch the chain....the rear derailleur is out of allingment and it likely moved past the largest rear gear and came off. You didnt do anything wrong. You just need to have it fixed where you bought it. Edit: well you didnt buy a big box store bike but you did get a low end bike shop bike and although there is nothing wrong with the brand it does have lower end components on it and they need to be adjusted properly that is all. dont worry about it!
edit: Yes I am familiar with the brand, we sell it too at PBS, not a bad bike it probably was not finaled before you took it out the store or you turned the right shifter too far and caused the cable to pull on the derailleur too hard and the chain jumped ...Yes you can shift the right side to 8 when the left is in two but NOT at the same time! either way you came off the cassette and turned it too hard or the derailleur is off a bit and in this position the chain is a bit overextended too dont go up to 8th position keep it in 6 or 7 and you will be fine you will have to get used to this over time.
