Please help me with this problem with Divx or Dvd file writing?

after i download a dvd file or divx movie and when i try to write it on a blank dvd-rw disk it shows over disk capacity or not enough space even though the downloaded file is only 700mb or less than 1 gb and the black disk is 4.7gb. please help.
