For example: I probably disagree with Jon Stewart 95% of the time, but I still think he's smart and funny.

I'm sure you can separate comedy from politics. But when politicians do so much to make themselves look like total a-holes, how can any self-respecting comedian pass it up? I love Jon Stewart, and find him to be one of the most insightful people on television. And he doesn't even have to be, because his show just needs to be funny, but he chooses to be insightful, and often does a better job reporting news than most of the news stations. He even points out when they have lost an opportunity to call out somebody on a bunch of bull.

Humor usually works if there's a lot of honesty mixed in with whatever caricature it is using to satirize its subject.

Case in point: most of Don Rickles' stuff where he's insulting his audience just isn't funny.

So... I'd say, above all you have to be honest to and about yourself before you're ready to be funny in general.

i love both Daily show & Colbert Report but i think there both satire. Stewart is the far left & Colbert is the far right guy. i dont take either show seriously
