poll: do you follow recipes or you work everything from the basics..?

yes.. im talking about math ! ..
do you just learn something in class and apply the rules to pass exam questions? .. or do you try to understand why thats the case and its lovely history behind it ..especially calculus .do you derive things from first principles .
