Problem with DVD drive in Acer Aspire T660?

I have an Acer Aspire T660-KB7Z PC with Windows Vista Home Basic pre-installed. I also have an external HDD with Ubuntu 8.10 on it. My DVD Drive, which is a "Hitachi HDT725025VLA380 ATA Device". The tray opens and closes, flashes, but doesn't read any disc. It only reads it if I have the disc in when it is starting up. I am wanting to put some songs on my Ipod nano, and can't because of the problem. Any help for the problem on Windows vista would be appreciated. Thank you!

windows vista is not a recomended window's. but to do anything about u should go to the computer store i had the same problem but they fixed it for under $50. don't send it away on an internet site eather.it will get stolen.
