This question is for those familiar with baby led weaning and/or the early introduction of solids.
Up until a few weeks ago, we used to eat family dinners with my 4 1/2 month old on my lap. We had to stop because she started grabbing handfuls of whatever was on our plate and freaking out when we took it away from her, I now have to wait until she is sleeping in order to eat.
She is a good size and her hunger is still satisfied with breast milk alone. So I don't see any reasons to start solids so soon. My plan has been to start her with BLW around 6 mos just like I did with my now 2 1/2 year old.
Well, today I had her sitting at the table with me while I was cutting up red peppers for dinner and she decided to grab a piece. It was a big piece, so it didn't pose a choking hazard and obviously isn;t soft enough for her to bite off a piece with just her gums, so I decided to let her have it. She was absolutely loving it! In fact, she dropped it a few times and started screaming hysterically.
I'm a bit mixed about how I feel about this. On one hand, it is something she did completely on her on. Its not like I'm force feeding her jars of mush. And she Isn't actually eating it since it isn't soft enough, she's really just using it as a teether. On the other hand, I obviously don't want her doing anything potentially harmful to her immature digestive system.
Do you think that letting her gnaw on raw veggies would be ok until she is ready to actually start solids in another month or so? Or do you think this would still be harmful?
