Question about Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone?

In the first book when Harry, Ron and Hermione went down the trap door in the attempt to stop Quirrell possessing the Philosopher's stone for Voldemolt, the final obstacle was the mirror of erised which Dumbledore had placed there. The challenge of the mirror was that only a wizard who wished to find the stone but not use it would be able to have the stone. In such a case, Quirrel and Voldemolt would never have been able to get the stone. So Harry and friends didn't really save the stone because there was no way that Quirrel would have been able to get the stone for Voldemolt, and in actual fact they put the stone in danger by going down there?

This is a question I have always wonder since the first time I read the book many many years ago. So tell me now, your opinions on this. Did Harry and friends technically save the stone? Would Quirrel and Voldemolt have been able to get the stone if Harry and friends didn't go down to save it?

Another question: If you had the power to rewrite any one of the Harry Potter books and prevent ONE death, who would you save and why?

Thank you
