I make my own jalapeno BBQ sauce from a recipe online that calls for 2-4 large fresh jalapenos which are browned in a skillet and blended into BBQ sauce. I use jalapenos from a jar that are presliced but measure out about the length of 4 peppers. It's not spicy enough for me though. Is it because I use the pickled jalapenos or possibly because I brown them in the skillet?

Fresh jalapenos will release oils into your sauce as it simmers. These oils are what will give your sauce that kick. Pickled jalapenos are good for snacks, tacos, burgers and the such where they are more of a condiment.

Probably a combination of both... Try to use a more spicy pepper such as serrano or possible habanero (these might be a bit too hot though)
