Question about nicotine and pregnancy?

My best friend just told me she's pregnant. She has been a heavy smoker since she was 13. It's going to be really hard for her to give it up. My question is:

Is it actually the nicotine in Ciggarettes that affect child development? Or just all the other chemicals in it?

My reason for asking is because I was thinking about getting her an electronic Ciggarette. They have options for low nicotine and some with even no nicotine, just for the experience of smoking.

This s probably a dumb question I know. I'd rather find out now than waste money.

Well first off all my mom smoked with my 2 brothers and they where healthy they are both 6.6 feet tall now, she didn't smoke with me and I spent the 1st 2 years of my life in hospital and been sickly growing up. 2nd I smoked with my daughter who is 4 now and she has only had the flu once, so my personal feeling is yes its not good but don't overdo it??
