I am trying to get into a good school for communications, and I found the school that I really want to get into. The problem is that they expect us to own a digital SLR camera for one eight week class.

I got online and comparison shopped, and found out that I can't get anything that has the lens for less than $500! I'll only be using it eight weeks! I'm not a photographer, and I'm horrible at taking pictures. Yes, I've used a DSLR, and it didn't help...but I need one for this class. So, I have a few questions:

First, and I know it sounds like I'm trying to "cheat my way out", but I'm not. Can they really tell if I'm using an SLR camera as opposed to one of the point and shoots with retractable lens? If so, is it the megapixel difference how they can tell? If they can't tell, does anyone have any good advice for a comparable comparison?

And, if not (to the last question), does anyone know of a decent site that I may have missed that has the camera cheaper? Whatever I get, I'm stuck with, and can't return it (I don't know how to sell things online...and don't have time to try to figure it out...if I can't find a buyer in the paper, I'm stuck).

Yes, I know I'm stubborn, and I'll be accused of being cheap, but the point is that as important as my education is (this is a really high ranking school), keeping food in my daughter's stomach, a roof over her head, and heat in our home is the ultimate goal here. Plus, I have a lot of dental work to get done this year because I'm in agony here. I just don't have that sort of money to spend.

Yes, I know I sound bitter...and I guess I am. Just fed up with the fact that even "Christian" schools act like you're dirt if you put your child's needs above their financial gain. :(
