Questions about the Xbox 360 Arcade and the New NXE?

I am going to be buying me an xbox 360 arcade soon. The reason I'm buying an arcade is because they have the new jasper chips inside of them. I was wondering if I can save the new NXE on the internal 256mb memory and have my gamertag on a memory card with my game saves. My friend is giving me a memory card to use. I'm going to get either the 60GB starter kit or the 120GB hard drive, but it will be a few months before I do that and I want to start gaming now and save my games and gamertag on an external source in case the xbox messes up. I wouldn't want my game saves to be lost on the xbox if i had to send it in for repair and lose everything. I'm sure it won't happen just extra caution is all. Can I do it. Thanks to everybody in advance that answered my question.
