Reprogramming and LED display on a DVD Player?

I just found an old DVD player, and after gutting the thing and keeping all of the parts operational, I wondered if I could somehow change what the LED display it has says. Is there a way to somehow connect it to my PC and do that, or would that require the program it was originally programmed with?
