I think you're referencing what he went through when he was chasing the single season home run record, set by Babe Ruth, during the 1961 baseball season.

Ruth had set the record of 60 HRs in a season in 1927. Many people thought the record was unbreakable.

1. As he was closing in on the record, the media attention got more intense. Maris was a pretty private person and he didn't much like all the attention...the constant questions, people on him all the time. He started losing his hair and he didn't sleep well at night.

2. There were many people who DIDN'T want him to break Ruth's record. Ruth was one of the most popular baseball players of all time. Others wanted the record to be broken by Maris' teammate, Mickey Mantle, if it was to be broken.

3. Well, he did lose some hair because of all the pressure. But, he DID break Ruth's record by hitting 61 HRs. He never came close to hiting that number of HRs in a year again, but he went on to have a very good baseball career.

1) Maris died from Hodgkin's lymphoma
2) Maris was a white Roman Catholic so I don't see what made him a target other than breaking the single season home run record.
3) Well Hodgkin's lymphoma killed him so he didn't and died at age 51, sadly.
