Ok so right now I have dial-up and soon I want to switch to DSL. I have Rogers home phone service (in Mississauga, GTA) - no Rogers TV or Internet - and last year the Rogers guys came to our home and installed this black box thing.

It has LEDs with "TEL1" "TEL2" "ONLINE" "DS" "US," "LINK" "POWER" "BATTERY" (exact labels) indicated on them. Is this a modem? Cable or DSL? Because then I could save myself money on buying the modem. Otherwise, what is its use if I don't have TV or Internet from Rogers? And does this box convert analog phone signals to digital or anything like that? I need to know what kind of phone signal I have to subscribe to my DSL provider (and it's NOT Rogers).

And the box has a thick wire that's coming from the wall (land line?) connected into it and it is ALSO plugged into a standard phone line (the wall socket) if that helps. Thanks for helping out.
