Safety of Bit Torrent Downloading?

There's been talk of 'Three Strikes' for those caught downloading copyrighted material. Isn't this a good thing for the downloaders? It means you can download as much as your connection can handle without the worry of being locked up or fined millions. You just wait until you get a warning, then take it easy for a bit.
Is it really that simple? Have people actually been done for downloading chart music and the latest film releases?
Are some ISP's better than others, for example, do they turn a blind eye? Are there some ISP's that watch your every move, ready to pounce as soon as you type in 'Gaga'?

AFAIK some copyright holders seed their own content. Then when you start downloading they can get your ip address, and fire off an email to the ISP or registered user of that ip address. I get a few at work, which I ignore (often I can't tell which visitor's laptop was responsible anyway).
So I presume if the ISP takes action, they contact you when they get one of these notices, but don't spy on your traffic themselves. For one thing, it's almost impossible from looking at traffic to tell for certain that it's an illegal download and not free content.

The "three strikes" is a common misconception just like it's ok to go 5mph over the speed limit. You can still get busted for it but you most likely will only get a warning the first time. If your using utorrent or whatever your using i would highly recommend using peerblocker (if you use win) or mobloquer (if you use ubuntu). They basically block peers looking into your network hence the name "peerblocker". My ISP sent me a letter saying "you were caught downloading such file on such date. You will be monitored by us or the FBI or the MPAA." Followed by a long legal paragraph. If you are continue to act against the copyright law our ISP service will be dropped & so on. So i started to useing mobloquer & haven't heard from them since so it works out well so DO THAT!

been using a torrent client now for about 6months and i read a lot of info about torrents and the safety of downloading them, and it seems hit and miss really as to if or when you get caught. some people say your ISP know exactly what you are downloading, others say using torrent guards protect you from your ISP knowing what you download.some people have even been issued with a warning for downloading the latest movies. it still sounds like a gamble whatever ISP you use, or try to limit your downloads so you dont become suspect.
its download at your own risk
