Salt dips for aquarium fish: How much salt to use in a gallon and how long?

I have a guppy that has what I think is sort of grey fungus around and down his mouth (sort of like a beard) that won't seem to go away with the Metafix and Pimafix. Early in the day, it looks like some of the grey has gone away on a side of the mouth but by the evening, it's fully back, any ideas as to why it does this? I'd like to try a salt dip on him to see if this'll help him at all but as I'm looking around on websites, I can't find a solid answer as to how much salt I should use in a gallon or how long I should leave the fish in it. Some places say 1/2 cup in 1 gallon for 5 minutes maximum and some places say a couple of teaspoons for 30 minutes. Please help me figure the right amount and time..
