Samsung BD-C6900 blu-ray player does not properly play MKV files?

I have sound issues when I try playing MKV files on my samsung BD-C6900 blu-ray player from an external hard drive via USB connection. For some reason the picture is fine but the sound is distorted, I played avi and mp4 files with no problems, but when trying to play high def MKV files the sound does work. Blu-ray player is connected via HDMI to my LG TV. Do I need to connect it to the receiver via optical cable to work or is the issue in sound codec? Any help is greatly appreciated.
