My favorite author is Philip K. Dick. I really like how his stories often contain paranoia and the aspect of total government control. I like dark stories with messed up endings. Do you know similar authors? I'm looking for novels and short stories where society is relatively normal but with advanced and frightening technology or power is in use and not so much light sabers and disintegration guns.

It doesn't necessarily have to be sci-fi either.

The Takeshi Kovacs novels by Richard Morgan. Start with Altered Carbon. Not as philosophical, but the setting/style is very much Blade Runner. For philosophical, dark, spooky anything by Stanislaw Lem, starting with Solaris.

I also HIGHLY recommend Ted Chiang. He's not so much paranoid but he does short, intelligent sci fi better than anyone since PKD, imo.

Hi Joe. Have you read any of Raymond E. Feist's books? 'The Riftwar Saga' is particularly good, and if you enjoy the first book, there are quite a few following on to keep you occupied! Although there are only 3 books in the actual 'Riftwar Saga', there are other books which are connected, i.e. 'The Empire Saga' which I thoroughly enjoyed.

The first book in the series is 'The Magician', and here is a brief overview of the book:

Isaac Asimov was an American author and professor of biochemistry at Boston University, and i find his understanding of science / technology gives great credibility to his imaginings created in his SF writings. He would have to be on the list :)

yeah like James smith said Isaac Asimov is a great sci-fi author and have many great novels in his belt.
secondly you might want to try Douglas adams he is one of my fav. authors specially his Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy i bet u must have heard it before or u might have already read it. what ever the case if u haven't then go for it.
