In response to an earlier question about why Islam is not secular, I've got an answer, but though i would get more feedback by making it a question.
So here was my answer, let me know what you think.
Liberal/secular democracies have failed. Crime has gone UP. Drug use has gone UP. There is moral decay and decadence, and the people are dissilusioned and living increasingly isolated lives. Look at America is the 1960's when the Supreme Court passed many liberal laws...there were riots in the streets and social order broke down according to President LBJ himself. You would think that many of the liberal laws that granted freedoms from the state would have led to a new, better world and society. Instead we got riots and civil disorder.
People are free to go around drinking, gambling, going to strip clubs etc...loss of morality, when you take away religious guidance.
So, it's important for religion to play a role that limits selfish individualism which ultimately leads to nihilism. Because once you start questioning authority, you start to question everything and all order eventually breaks down. It's a life where nothing is true and everything is permitted.
So this idea of individual freedom, will lead people to question everything, all truths, and all morals, ultimately leading to society's destruction. Religion therefore, acts as a glue to hold together the shared values which keep society together. Religion provides the glue to stop society from self destructing, by keeping selfish individualism contained. Religion provides a moral framework, to guide the people, and stop their selfish desires from spilling out of control.
BTW- this is not necessarily my view, but rather that of a couple of political philosophers i've read about.
