setting up home theater surround sound.?

i have a 40 inch sharp aquos tv that i just bought. i dont really want to buy one of those $100 or $200 surround sounds systems that comes with a dvd player because i just bought a dvd player... so im thinking of just buying a couple of book shelf speakers and using those, or even just buying a "boombox" and using the 2 speakers that it comes with. If this is the case, how would i go about hooking up the speakers to the tv? i see they have the 2 black and red wires and that it.. how would you connect those to the tv?? is there a conversion plug that you can buy or something?

The tv have 4 hdmi plugs, and "audio" plug, looks like a headphone jack, and a digital audio output port, not too sure what this is for.

You cannot connect speakers directly to the TV, you need a receiver or amplifier, with a Sharp Aquos why not buy a surround?

All HDTV sound is 5.1 just like your DVD player. Your TV speakers are stereo. Buying another stereo system ... would not really improve things.

My advice: save your money and buy a Box system w/o a DVD player, but a big, black box receiver, self powered sub and 5 speakers. (Look around - they sell them).

The big black AV Receiver will have inputs for all those things.

Or - look into a "SoundBar" - this is a single, long speaker that has an array of 5.1 speakers, built in amp and takes an optical input so it works from both your TV and DVD player.
