On my new pokemon White version, i'm gonna soft reset for a shiny Tepig. In heartgold and soulsilver, you saw the sprite of all 3 of the starters before you picked one, so the chances of getting a shiny is cut in 1. Then again, in Ruby and Sapphire, it didn't matter how the pokemon appeared from the breifcase, so wouldn't know if it was shiny until you brought it into battle. Which is the case for black and white? Can you tell from the box, or do you have to wait, and find out when you battle Bianca?
