He had one of the worst upbringings possible-- had a cupboard for a room, recieved no attention from his guardians except for harsh comments and commands, had to watch his cousin have a totally different upbringing right under the same roof-- I just don't see how he could have been anywhere near normal. A child's intelligence often results from parents interacting with them while they are young. If all he did up until he could do chores for the Dursleys was sit around being ignored without any social interaction or mind-stimulating activities then it's a miracle he could even talk (lol). He must have been born with a special chemical imbalance that helped him out rather than damaged him
