I have a 1997 Ford Thunderbird that has only had one previous owner. I bought it for $2200 and besides a little rusted paint from sitting in my aunts driveway in the texas heat all summer and old lining on the windows, its a really good car. When I bought it it only had 82,000 miles on it and now has about 86,000.

My father owes my mother a lot of back child support and she will be getting a large sum of money in September and has agreed to give me $2000 of it. By then I will have my car completely paid off.

I am planning to move to California after Christmas and am worried that my car couldn't handle the drive to California from Texas/wouldn't be reliable once I'm there. I was considering selling my car for $2000 and taking the $2000 my mother is giving me and getting a newer car. The problem is that all the cars I've looked at in that price range look better cosmetically but have a lot more miles.

Would my car that has never had problems and has low miles hold up better, or should I opt for a newer car with more miles?

Your car has very low miles for 12 years old. Assuming you have taken care of it there is no reason to think it wont last quite a few more years and miles. For a few dollars and few hours of your time you can repair the rust and window seals at home in the driveway.

There is a lot of benefit in owning a car that you know its history.
