Should you give your number out to people you are not interested in just to be nice?

Someone at work gave me their phone number to call them sometimes. This person is pretty nice, but I am not the least bit attractive to them. I am interested in being their friend, but that's it. If I call them or allow them to give me their phone number, am I sending the wrong message? If I don't accept their phone number or call them, will I seem rude?
