Smoke has been coming out of my Nissan Xterra's center air air vents.

What could be causing this? I have an '01 Xterra and lately I've been smelling what seems to be like either burning coolant or something...oil. Today there was actually smoke coming out of the center air vents.

Does anyone know what problem this might be?

When that happened to me, the air hoses were catching fire - Citroen Dyane, air cooled. A bit later, flames came out.
 
you trucks heater core its leaking coolant
inside the cab
its steam what you see coming out
have it replace or bridge the hoses so you dont loose coolant and create bigger problems
 
if u smelling coolant, like from radiator, ......u got a leak or ruptured heater core

get a small mirror or glass and put at vent to see if its water vapor

if heater core is prob, try turn off heat.....if still same.....heat selector valve is by-passing coolant too
