So I found my Gameboy color recently, and my game isn't saving my progress?

I'm talking about the old one that was see through purple you know? Well I have pokemon silver in it and it won't save my progress. Does that mean that the gameboy is messed up or the cartridge? I assume the cartridge but just making sure before I buy another one :)
lol i know it's old school, i'm planning on buying a ds next month , i just love it =)
