Special USB Cable for Nokia Nseries?

My friend is here with her phone and will be for several more days. She doesn't have a charger, but it charges through a USB mini port. I have uSB->USBmini cable, but it doesn't seem to charge. Also, the computer recognizes something is plugged in, and the phone asks if i want to go into Data Transfer mode, but it fails to show up as a removable disk. Is this because I must install something on the computer, or because I need a special USB cable?
