It's not that it's unorthodox, it's just that the party has shifted so much that it caters only to old, white men. It ignores and tramples on minorities.

I do believe that Lincoln was a republican and if I am not mistaken he did write the emancipation proclamation.

Black people used to be Republicans back when it was the party of Lincoln. During the 60's, Democrats in the south were in power and they were fighting against civil rights for blacks. It made sense for blacks to be Republicans at that time.
