I'm aware this question is likely to have been done to death, but I'm going to ask anyway.
I'm 17 years old, female and have been training BJJ regularly for some time now. I wouldn't say I'm particularly good, because I've had other commitments which have made me lose focus of my training, however, in the next few months I'll be having a 'break' from study and plan to train as often as my body will allow (I don't want to destroy my body too quickly).
Anyway, I'll be moving over this break and have been talking to some people in the new area about finding a gym to train in. Anyway, long story short, I know some people in a serious fight gym who have suggested I come along and try the fundamentals MMA class. I must say I've wanted to try MMA for a while now, people talk about how barbaric it is, and in a sense they're probably right, however I can see a lot of skill involved- and I'm interested in learning some of that awesome standup and clinch technique I see so often.
The only thing is, I'm a little concerned about the fact that it's a serious fight gym in the area, and I'm a girl. I don't really care about being punched, I've had broken ribs before from after an MMA class at my current gym, where the instructor got me to spar with a guy (afterwards he said he was going at like 80% ugh) plus consistent broken toes, elbows and knees to the face etc. Honestly, I just want to learn the technique, then improve speed, accuracy, power etc. I'm not gonna go around saying "I wanna kick guys asses" or "I wanna &(*% people up in the cage".
Sorry about the long winded post, anyway, my REAL question is, how would you go about preparing for the gym environment (I expect it to be different to my current gym, so laidback here) and the training itself? As I said, I don't care too much about minor injuries, but how would you go about avoiding major ones (that will stop me training) in my situation? What would be your biggest tip about starting training?
Thanks so much for persevering through this question...
Thank you so much guys, I really appreciate you not going all "women shouldn't be in MMA" on me. You've given me some awesome advice, and I'm really excited to see what the new gym is like
