Surround sound won't work on my Sony Blue Ray?

I cannot get my Blue Ray player to play in 5.1. I have new new Denon reciever and it plays movies in PL II. I had the same problem with my old reciever. I have the Blue Ray connected to the reciever by HDMI cable.
I am pretty sure it process both video and audio. I have my directv reciever hooked up by just HDMI and tv shows come in with 5.1. and it is a brand new reciever over $700.00.

Does your receiver process both audio and video thru HDMI? Some only process the video. If your doesn't do both, you need to add an optical cable from the blu ray straight into your receiver to get surround.
