I have accepted a position at JDC to do Speech Therapy with the special education students. I understand from the current Speech Therapist who has been covering there that "the kids are dangerous" but it's "not that bad" and "the therapist is not a target of the violence like the guards, officers and teachers are". Although I have committed to the job at this time, I am still feeling a lot of uncertainty in regards to my safety. I know the kids won't always be easy to work with, that I can handle. But the fear of being injured or worse has got me concerned, but I don't know if I am being overly afraid and should just get over it? I will see students one at a time, for less than 30 minutes at a time and with someone nearby or in the room with me always. I do not have to see students if they refused or are acting out that day. So I wonder with these conditions if that might lessen my overall risk for getting hurt? I'm wondering if I should scrap this job and find another before I even try it out. Anyone have experience or an opinion?
