Teacher Being Unfair With Quiz Question?

Okay, so I'm taking AP Gov, and we had to read a really long packet about the 2000 Election. It took me probably 3 hours to read. The next day, as expected, we have a quiz. It's only one question: "How was the 2000 election close?" Seems easy enough. You needed three examples, so I wrote:
1. Nader took votes away from Gore
2. Gore failed to get many of the states Clinton won in 96, while Bush lost none of the states Dole won.
3. Bush's DUI prevented some from voting for him.

And that would seem to make sense. Except his only accepted answers were:
1. Electoral college count was close
2. Popular vote was close
3. (can't remember the last answer, but it was along these lines).

I know it took a while to explain all that, but my question is, was that a fair question to ask? Was it too much of a trick question? Is it wrong for him to fail most of the class just because his question wasn't clear enough?

Sorry dude, but your answers are wrong.
You gave the answer for the question- Who failed to get many states Clinton.
First analyse the question.
