Its caused by a recessive gene. Can be caused by inbreeding, people who raise lions for canned/trophy hunting often crossbreed littermates to produce a white lion, which trophy hunters are willing to pay over $100k for.
In the wild it rarely happens but every now and then a white lion is born. A certain tribe in South Africa considers them to be sacred and want the government to protect them.

Here's something interesting. My neighbor has lost 6 goats so far to a cougar. Based on the paw prints (just shy of 5 inches wide), it's estimated weight is 150 pounds. Over the last several months, they've tried traps, blinds, and finally running it down with dogs to no avail. It just took off with another one of his goats last night. It jumped over his 10 foot electrified fence with a 30 pound goat in its mouth.

Now that's a kitty!

P.S. We live in northern Collin county, just outside of Dallas.

Males mate but havent made any babies yet. Assumed sterile. female ligers and tigons can have offspring their names are li- liger and litigon.
