The Death Penalty

I can agree with this statement to a point. Yes the US can act the bully sometimes. Yes we support regimes that (some clown "politicians" think) may benefit us! Yes we have arrogant people that travel and make us look bad. But at the same time, we, as a nation, hand over more money, more aide, more labor, then most other Nations. And that is just from the private citizens! Why the heck don't you hear or read about the amount of assistance from say China? Russia? we hear about their contributions at times. I am not saying the US is right all the time but no one cares that some lunatics killed people! And, as this is a MA site, I ask this; If you got punched in the mouth, do you fight back or apologize for putting your mouth in the way of your attacker's fist? No country is perfect. No country should force it's views on others. No country should condone the senseless killing of others! But each country has the right to defend it's borders and it's citizens. Look what happened to France in WWII because no one wanted to get involved!

I will give you Iran. This war should have been waged, if it had to be waged, at another time. But when the terrorists attacked the US, killing several people who were not citizens of this country, and those terrorists were trained by Al Qaeda based in Afghanistan. Seems like we should attack the place where their leader is. Sorry, but even a Japanese naval officer knew that the attack in Pearl Harbor meant trouble. I am just amazed that people wonder why we struck back. Maybe you would think it more prudent, better for the planet if we just stood here and took our lumps!

Nope, they just supported Bin Laden. If our intel services had not been decimated by years of budget cuts maybe we could have found Bin Laden, dialed in his coordinates and blown him to bits. If he was in Afghanistan, Pakistan, or Saudi Arabia, those governements would have stated that we had no right to attacke their country just because the lunatic was living there. Remember, the US and other nations urged the Afghan government to turn over Bin Laden or face an attack. They didn't, we hit them in the nose. Not that this is reflective of the death penalty for Moussaui.

I think we've hijacked this thread with a debate from another thread, we probably shouldn't have done that. Sorry.

Hijack Continues:

Sorry but I think you need to read up a bit more on Bin Laden and Afghanistan. Not everyone supported the Taleban or Bin Laden. Far from it... otherwise they wouldn't have had a civil war raging against the norhern alliance for so long.

If only the mujahedin had been as good at running the country in times of peace as they were at beating the pants off the Russians in times of war then we might have never heard of the Taleban and the likes of Bin Laden.

When you jump in and say 'they supported Bin Laden' it makes me think you don't really know much about politics in South Asia or about the inter-ethnic strife in Afghanistan.

I can assure you that Ahmed Shah Massoud and many other did NOT support Bin Laden or the Taleban.

As well, given that a very large percentage of Afghani's are actually ethnic Uzbeks, Tajiks and Hazaras (not Pashtuns as the Taleban are) I don't think you're going to find much to back up your erroneous blanket statement that 'Afghanistan supports Bin Laden'.

I must admit my understanding of politcs in Afghanistan, pre war, was poor.

Agreed!

THEY, was meant to mean the Taliban and supporters of Bin Laden and not the populus.

Obviously the Northern Alliance weren't supporting Bin Laden... hence being our allies in the military action against the Taliban.

I am against the death penalty and when I am appointed president of the world I will take all the rapists, murderers and child molesters and give them cancers and AIDS and test on them for a cure. If they die it's no great loss, if we cure them we'll give them something else. The death penalty would mean these low lives get the easy way out, my way would justify keeping them alive and save a lot of fwuffy bunnies.

On a related topic, my immigation policy would be for every foreign born person who wants to come to England and work and otherwise contribute to society I would send an English born waster who plays the benefit system to another country. Probably France.

I await your generous contributions in exchange for government corruption.

And his encarceration begins. This guy, actually his lawyers, are still fighting.

Speaking of France, this guy was French!

Thank you sir! He didn't like his birth country, France, or the US. Just guessing but I don't think Colorado is his cup of tea either.

I'm pretty liberal on the immigration issue, but give me an eastern european brain surgeon over an english council estate scrounger any day

To get back to the topic of the thread...

As I see it, the main reasons we don't have the death penalty any more in this country (quite apart from moral considerations, which are really a matter of personal belief) are:

1. Too many miscarriages of justice have taken place. At least with a life sentance you can let them go. Saying "sorry" to their family never seems quite enough, somehow.

2. Lack of deterrant effect. We don't have a higher murder rate since we abolished it, so it obviously never actually worked as a deterrant.

3. Poor punishment. With the death sentance, the punishment is over and done with rather quickly. At least with a life sentance, the offender gets plenty of time to suffer remorse. Take Ian Brady for example (one of the Moors Murderers.) In recent years he has wanted to be allowed to starve himself to death, but has been prevented from doing so. He must serve his time - to the end of his natural life.

I think one of the major concerns I have witht the death penalty for offences other thanm murder is that then you'r simply going to kill your victim as well as doing whatever you did to give you a better chance of getting away.

On top of that my understanding of it is that most women who are raped don't want to see there attacker killed so having a death penalty for rape would decrease the reports of it in all likelihood.
