The fraken religion in Battlestar?

Now, I know this should probably not be posted here and I see your point but recently I've been turned on to battlestar galatica by a friend of mine and I like it, but one point really bugged me in season 2, blind faith.
There were those that put thousands of people in danger because the felt that they received a religious message, it astonished me.
So here's my question, in time's of crisis, I mean end of the world crisis, would you think with your head or your heart? If humanity was threatened with extinction, would you risk it all for religion?
 
It would be important to think with your head, leaders especially, in such a situation. But I imagine many people would turn to faith simply because they need something to believe in.

Battlestar Galactica is meant as allegory, but the world of BSG is not meant to be our world, it is an imagined world for our entertainment.
