Matt Harvey came close to a no-hitter Tuesday. Shelby Miller was nearly perfect Friday. Baseball awaits its first no-hitter or perfect game of the season, and Sunday a few pitching performances had people thinking back to when Dallas Braden threw a perfect game on Mother's Day 2010.
Chris Sale and Jorge De La Rosa, they both were close.
Sale, the lanky Chicago White Sox ace, took a perfect game into the seventh inning against the Los Angeles Angels before Mike Trout broke it up with a single. De La Rosa, meanwhile, and his Colorado Rockies teammates didn't give up a hit to the St. Louis Cardinals until there were two outs in the seventh. Close, but now we still wait for that elusive pitching gem.
Sale's performance was blemish-free except for that Trout single. He finished with a one-hit shutout as the White Sox won 3-0. After the game, he told reporters this was going through his head during the game:
"There's no way this is going to happen."
Have some confidence, dude.
De La Rosa left after seven innings and the Cards scored two in the ninth, but the Rockies still managed an 8-2 victory. This is noteworthy for Colorado, because they were on the futile side of one-hit and two-hit shutouts Friday and Saturday.

Blue Jays 12, Red Sox 4: Toronto hits five homers, including two from Jose Bautista, to power past Boston, which has lost eight of its last 10.
Cubs 2, Nationals 1: Cubs score in eighth and ninth as Nats waste a stellar outing from Gio Gonzalez.
Rays 4, Padres 2: That's five in a row for the Rays, including a sweep of the Padres. There's always Father's Day, guys.
Yankees 4, Royals 2: Robinson Cano, Vernon Wells both go deep as Yankees sweep Royals.
Orioles 6, Twins 0: Starter Wei-Yin Chen leaves with injury, but no matter as the Baltimore offense handles business.
Rangers 12, Astros 7: Rangers pummel Astros as Adrian Beltre goes 4-for-5 with four RBIs. It was 12-1 going into the eighth.
Giants 5, Braves 1: Tim Lincecum looks strong for S.F., pitching seven scoreless innings and striking out seven. It was his best start of 2013.
Mariners 6, A's 1: Joe Saunders improves to 3-0 at home — but 0-4 on the road. The A's are 3-7 in last 10 games.
Dodgers 5, Marlins 3: The Dodgers have won two in a row after going 0-for-May until Saturday.
Phillies 4, Diamondbacks 2: Brandon McCarthy pitches eight scoreless innings for the D-backs, who then give it up in the ninth and tenth.
"It's an inning that I'd always like to go back out [for], but the last few weeks things haven't been smooth, so I haven't been a guy that has been counted on. I'd like to get that reputation back where if I'm in that situation, it's a no-brainer that I'd go out for the ninth."

• Matt Kemp got his 1,000th career hit Sunday.
