The sound went out on my desk top vista Home Premium pc. Help!?

Lots of static for several days then nothing! Bought new Logitech desk top speakers followed instructions ...nothing! Can't afford to take it in to a computer geek at $200 a visit. Searched the web for free help but nothing has worked yet. I would appreciate any helpful suggestions. Thanks in advance.
