I read a particular paperback book during the 1970's, the storyline was as follows -
The world had only one species - human, and except for one person who had devoted his life to trying to keep alive the handful of remaining birds and small mammals, he was under ever increasing pressure to euthanise them, to enable the world to be 100% human inhabited.
I remember the nightmare story but not the title, and now with the human population reaching a disgusting 7 billion and still increasing, the nighmare story is looking to become a reality in the not too far future, if things are not reversed before it is too late.
