The World Cup

That's why they do it. If the Welsh were to take it seriously England would be stuffed!

the portugal game was a joke...england must be licking their lips looking forward to playing portugal with the suspensions and the injury to ronaldo

It was yet another England game only won by Beckham's kicking ability. We'll see how they do when they meet a wounded Portugal. I can't wait for Germany v. Argentina.

You've picked out pretty much all the high points there!

Rooney looked sharp and lively - but I think that playing up front on his own is a waste of his talents. Playing 4-5-1 without genuine wide men just means that you end up trying to thread the ball through the crowded centre of the defence.

Lampard is getting into scoring positions, which is good - but his finishing has gone to pot, and he seems to have lost all confidence in front of goal.

Yet another rubbish performance from Beckham, but his goal means that he will remain undroppable.

Even without Deco, Ronaldo, etc., I've got a bad feeling that Portugal are going to rip us to shreds.

Lampard is a moron, I was screaming for him to be replaced. He gets the ball 40 yards from goal and he'll put it into Row Z, he gets the ball in the box and he tries to pass it. Replace the muppet!

I'd go back to 4-4-2 and play Gerrard in the middle with Carrick holding. I'd play Gerrard wide right instead of Beckham, if Lampard wasn't so off form. As it is, Lennon will have to start wide right, with Joe Cole wide left.

There you go - sorted.

Because (a) he hasn't got a clue, and (b) he hasn't got the guts to make any tough decisions.

Scolari is a master tactician, could cause England all kinds of problems

Yes - and we could have him to look forward to, rather than Steve McClaren, if only the FA weren't even bigger muppets than Sven!

It would be a bit of an upset if he didn't!

Portugal have looked pretty sharp so far. Last night they looked miles better than the Dutch even when they were a man down (which as nearly all the second half.) It could have been a great match, but Holland turned it into a war, which was a pity. I suppose they knew that it was their only chance.

Portugal will miss Deco, but I suppose Petit will be a perfectly adequate replacement for Costinha. Christiano Ronaldo must be very doubtful for Saturday, which is good news for us, because he can be a handful.

But it's so hard to predict anything with England at the moment. You just don't know what ker-razy kapers Sven will unleash next. But then nor do the opposition! Big Phil is probably tearing his hair out trying to guess what Sven will do, and he's got very little chance, because.......

.....Sven doesn't know either!

I reckon England will start with the same team, unless Gary Neville is fit in which case he will start ahead of Hargreaves, who may replace Michael "Didn't touch the ball all night" Carrick.

i don't think england can win this year, cause their form is really not there.i think the finalists should be spain and portugal cause they seem to be in top form

I think you are being a little harsh on Michael Carrick! He played some good penetrating passes yesterday. I admit that I don't remember him making many tackles, but generally we coped very well with Ecuador's rare attempts to attack. (The only scare coming from another unforced error by John 'I use to be Mr Reliable' Terry.)

Owen Hargreaves did OK. Nothing spectacular, but if he had made the kind of forward runs that Beckham should have been making, then the danger is that he can't get back in time to cover behind him.

I reckon the Portugal Holland game was brilliant!
I can't recall the last time I saw a match where everybody was just hell-bent on cheating their way through.
Poor old ref thought he'd book a couple of players early to stamp his authority on the game.
Instead, the opposing players decided that they'd try and exploit it and see if they could get people sent off.
I see that they've decided not to do anything more to Figo for the headbutt - that's a stupid precedent!

those are the rules, if the referee had seen the headbutt and yellow carded him for it then thats that. Basically it was another monumental screw-up by the referee, who even the FIFA President has labelled as poor.
